Being one of the hottest drummers in Singapore who plays for some of the hottest acts that we know; Wen Ming Soh (better known as Wen) has been inspiring fellow drummers in the local scene. Currently running Carvers & Co. just below Thunder Rock School's East Coast branch, Wen is the latest drummer to join the ranks of musicians at the school. This Berklee College of Music alumnus who has played for acts such as Corrinne May, Stephanie Sun, F.I.R., Jeremy Monteiro and currently Charlie Lim, gives us some insights on his mentality towards his passions.
1. How did you get started on drumming?
I got started when one day in church the drummer who was supposed to play just didn't turn up, and I just put up my hand and said I wanted to play. I didn't do great, but I did well enough that the church took a chance on me and let me into the music team, from there one thing led to another.
I must say that musical life and career has been serendipitous and I've always been blessed to meet the right people at the right time. From having Antony Fong, the best first teacher a drummer can have, to meeting the great Edmund Branson, to getting to work with the genius Joshua Wan and the amazing icon Jeremy Monteiro, and having the incomparable Kerong Chok and Andrew Lim as comrades, I must say I've gotten to learn and be around the best in the business.
2. Through your years of drumming, what was your biggest take away?
That talent is an overrated commodity.
3. As a barista/restauranteur and a musician, how do you find your balance in work, life and passion?
Some of the best people I have ever met are the people I currently work with at Carvers & Co. I know what it's like to be a creative person striving to be the best I can be, and as a "boss" (and I hate the word) I see my role as being to grow the business so that the people I work with get a chance to be the rockstars I know they can be.
4. Any future plans?
To keep trying to associate myself with people who have the same energy, whether in the field of music or F&B
