Singaporean gig photographer Donald Soh recently launched his new web portal at http://donaldart-portfolio.com/ . We flashed Donald Soh 5 quick questions about working in the music scene as a photographer. Here are snap shots of what he has to say:
What made me pick up gig photography was my love for band gigs, seeing musicians live, and trying to capture their emotions and actions through photos.
I love photography as a perfect way of capturing moments. It tells a story through images captured. Sure, you could say video/motion pictures tell stories as well; and does it better and even smoother with a whole lot of sequencing and frames - Still, images like photos that are limited in frames/shots do it for me.
Fewer shots makes viewers interpret and guess the in-betweens of a story more. Hence, more appreciation and focus are given to the shots, as they are limited in numbers. Only the significant/key moments are being shown.
I started out back in 2007 when I was 17 with just a Nikon Coolpix Point and shoot digital camera while attending lots of local gigs (especially at venues like SCAPE Youth Park, Home Club, etc.). A year later in 2008 I got my first DSLR and I shot at more gigs.
2012 was when I decided to give it a go at Esplanade's Budding Photographer Programme under the mentorship of Aloysius Lim and I got selected with 6 others. From then on I shot several local gigs/festivals like Baybeats, Yfest, 100 Bands Festival, Thunder Band Slam.
I have also shot for some foreign bands. To name a few: Alice Cooper (USA) No More Mr Nice Guy Tour 2011, Children of Bodom (Finland) Ugly World Tour 2011, Chthonic (Taiwan) Bu-Tik Asia Tour 2013, Havok (USA) Unnatural Selection Asia Tour, and Paul Di'Anno (UK) Beast in the Far East Tour 2014.
There are way too many memorable times I had with bands. One memorable one back in 2013 when I was going on a mini tour with Australian Pop Rock band, 1927 for their Generation-i Tour in Malaysia (Melaka and KL) and Singapore organised by Street Noise Productions.
It was a good experience where I got a taste of what it is like to be on the road with bands and documenting their whole tour through photos and videos. Besides shooting the bands and their gigs, I also snap photos of other moments during our free time on tour (sightseeing, food hunting).
I am currently waiting to start my life as a student in Uni SIM, doing a degree in Communications in 2 weeks time. At the same time, I'm searching for more freelance shoots. And before I forget, I just launched my revamped portfolio website and a new tumblr as well.
My dream job would be becoming a touring gig photographer. Most likely shooting big festivals out of Singapore, like Fomoz Festival, Spring Scream Festival and Ho Hai Yan Rock festival, etc in Taiwan.
